The National Workshop
(report - pdf 82k) was held in June 2003. Based on the outcome of
the workshop, the DTIS and the action matrix were revised. The
General Policies Committee of the Councils of Ministers endorsed
the revised DTIS and action matrix on May 31, 2004. USAID fielded
a mission in January 2004 to identify possible Trade-Related Technical
Assistance projects.
A Poverty Reduction Strategy for 2006-2010 is in preparation.
Issues related to WTO accession were included in the May 2002 PRSP;
efforts will be made to incorporate the DTIS findings in this
Strategy. Another point of attention will be the preparation of
concrete project proposals based on the recommendations of the IF
action matrix.
Three
Window II projects have been launched:
-
strengthening of industrial and trade
registry capacity
-
fruit and vegetable export promotion
-
fisheries quality control for export
promotion
The IF facilitator (The Netherlands) has funded a project to
identify steps to support the Government in promoting economic
diversification and growth in the non-oil sector. This would help
donors in delivering coordinated aid activities. The project is also
aimed at incorporating trade issues into the next PRSP.
Other donor funded activities include:
- GTZ/EU: Support for WTO accession negotiations
- USAID: Projects in the following areas: Customs
Valuation, Intellectual Property Rights and Compliance with U.S.
SPS rules
- UNDP/UNCTAD: Customs automation
- The Netherlands: Agriculture, Fisheries
